There's nothing quite like Chinese food cooked the South Asian way - fried rice made with fragrant basmati, chili chicken cooked with Indian spices. The best South Asian-Chinese food in NYC is at Tangra Masala in Elmhurst, Queens. It's a huge space, usually filled with families and large groups. The prices are reasonable and the chicken lollipops are a must. It's byob, though you might get a disapproving stare from an auntie or two...
Tangra Masala
2 locations in Queens:
39-23 Queens Blvd and 87-09 Grand Avenue
(If you can't make it out to Queens, you can try Indo Munch or Chinese Mirch in Murray Hill, not as good as Tangra but still satisfying)

Tangra's pretty awesome. i actually had an event there 17 bux a plate covers everything. Lolly pop chicken with chicken corn soup (better if you use the soup as a dip) is awesome.
